Art from the Indies in the Dutch Royal Capital
The Venduehuis has a long history of selling art from Indonesia and the former Indies. This hardly comes as a surprise when you realise The Hague was the administrative centre of the former Dutch East Indies. Many civil servants from the Indies retired to The Hague, and following the declaration of Indonesia’s independence, over 100,000 people returned to the Netherlands, many of whom also moved to The Hague. Today, this intimate relationship between the city and Indonesia continues to exist, even though the nature of that relationship has changed significantly since 1947.
More than any other city in the Netherlands, The Hague still plays an important role in maintaining contacts with Indonesia, so at the Venduehuis, we consider it our mission to sell Indonesian art at auctions and to bring it to the attention of the general public.
